"Data" derives from the Latin word datum ("something given"), the past participle of dare ("to give").

The Venerable Bede (672–735), an English monk and scholar, codified the finger-counting system in his 8th-century treatise "De temporum ratione", written to help monks calculate the date of Easter.

In his method, each number from 1 to 9 corresponded to a distinct configuration of a single hand: one finger per value, hence the Latin "digitus".
